ADA, OHIO -
It's counterintuitive, but engineering students at Ohio Northern University are making canoes out of concrete... And they actually float!
We caught up with the ONU team as they during one last practice before heading out to a national competition this morning... proving that the boat made of concrete really does work!
The year long project, which includes structural and material design and paddle races, concludes this week with a nation-wide competition in Indiana. For those studying engineering, the project provides a practical application of their classroom lessons.
As part of the rules, this year's canoe had to incorporate green materials. Drew and his team chose to use recycled glass and silicon beads for their light weight properties. Drew believes they have a good shot at doing well at this year's competition.
This is the fourth trip to national for ONU in 6 years... Good luck!
