As summer sweeps in, Auglaize County organizations try to bring food to tables of those in need. Mercy Unlimited Food Pantry's "Plant a Row for the Hungry" program is down this year.
The program collected more than seven thousand pounds of fresh food for pantry clients last year and so far they have brought in only 100 pounds due the issues with the weather. Area gardeners are encouraged to plant extra rows in their garden for donation, but because donations are down, the pantry is giving plants and seeds to clients to grow their own food. The program helps provide them with nutritious fresh food in addition to the pre-packaged food from the pantry which can be unhealthy.
The Auglaize County United Way's Christmas in July food drive will help fill up the Mercy Unlimited's food pantry among other local food pantries. Cans and non-perishable food items can be dropped off at a variety of stores starting July 23rd.
For more information on where to drop off items visit www.auglaizeunitedway.org. Local gardeners can drop off produce to Mercy Unlimited during regular business hours.
