5.5 million pounds of materials were recycled in Auglaize County last year with help from volunteer groups like the Auglaize County Shooting Sports 4-H Club. Helping out at the Wapakoneta drive-thru recycling center is some pretty dirty work for the 4-Hers.
A new volunteer group runs the facility each week, and they get to keep the money from the recycled materials. Last year, the groups collected $68,000, but there is much to be done to raise the money.
Auglaize County residents bring bags and boxes of plastics, glass and other recyclables. These items go to manufacturers to be used in raw materials.
Besides providing a community service while raising money, the 4-H group is also getting an education. When items get thrown in the garbage rather than recycled, it goes to a dump, where it costs the county $1 million an acre to build on.
As cars drive thru and continue to fill up the facility with more and more items to recycle, it inspires the youth.
