A school bus struck an area near Mcclain Road just around 12:45 PM Tuesday afternoon causing traffic to back up.
Officials with the Ohio State Highway Patrol say the bus was traveling south bound on Interstate 75 when one of the three children traveling on the bus stabbed the bus driver in the neck with a pencil causing the driver to lose control and swerve off the right side of the road.
The young suspect fled the scene on foot only to be found a few hours later by the Allen County Sheriff's Office near Market Street in Lima. The bus driver was taken to Lima Memorial hospital and has since been released with minor injuries. One of the students was taken to St. Rita's for precautionary observation. Superintendent Paul Nardini says the student is in the eighth grade and has behavioral issues and says there is still much more information that needs to be gathered to figure out exactly what happened. The patrol is reporting that the boy is being charged with a felony assault. Authorities and school officials are taking this matter very seriously because not only was a school employee assaulted, but the lives of other students were put in danger. Because the individual is a juvenile, his name has not yet been released.
