It was thought to be the "BRAC to end all BRAC's".
The 'Base Realignment and Closure' process of 2005 was done to close under-used and or no longer needed U.S. military installations here at home and abroad.
But now word of another potential round, possibly two of 'BRAC' discussions is being proposed by the Department of Defense.
Defense Secretary Leon Panetta says President Obama will look to begin another 'BRAC' process as part of his 2013 budget. When the most recent BRAC came about nearly 7 years ago, Task Force Lima was formed and local leaders traveled to Washington with Your New Now in tow to fight to keep the Joint Systems Manufacturing Center open. They accomplished that, and the Task Forces chairman says they will be ready if Lima is again on the closure list. David Berger says he is pleased that the Task Force is still up and running and they are well positioned for any BRAC discussions.
Secretary Panetta this week said "BRAC" is the best way to reduce the D.O.D's real estate footprint, however The Federal Times, a weekly paper in D.C., reported there is bi-partisan opposition in Congress to another 'BRAC', some Senators telling the paper if the proposal is brought to congress, it will be quote, "dead on arrival".
