Government looking to limit dashboard distraction in cars

Posted: Updated:

Cars these days are coming with a lot of extra gadgets on their auto dashboards including GPS navigation, text messaging and the ability to make phone calls.

The government recently released voluntary guidelines asking car makers to cut down on the distractions. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration wants dashboard devices to be disabled while a car is in motion. While he believes the government is concerned with consumer safety, Lima Auto Mall Sales Manager Joe Shaw believes the built in systems are safer than someone using their phone.

The goal of the built in systems is to help keep a drivers attention on the road. Many car models already disable the navigation system while the car is moving, something traditional GPS systems don't do. Car makers will review the proposed guidelines and have a 60 day period in which to comment.
