Armstrong Air & Space Museum celebrates Glenn's first orbit

Updated:

Monday is the 50th anniversary of the first American to orbit around the earth.

The Armstrong Air and Space Museum in Wapakoneta has a new temporary display that marks the occasion when John Glenn circled the earth three times.

Besides a Chicago Tribune newspaper chronicling the feat, there is also a life magazine picture in the museum featuring Glenn in a sea of confetti during one of the biggest ticker tape parades in New York City.

Glenn was born in Cambridge, Ohio but grew up in New Concord.

There's even a picture of Glenn and a very young Neil Armstrong together in a survival training exercise.

Chris Burton, Executive Director for the Armstrong Air and Space Museum says Glenn's impact on the space program can't be quantified.

The museum is also open on President's Day which coincides with Glenn's trip around the earth. Many of the activities at the museum deal with the presidents and the space program.

Glenn also has a connection to the presidential office, he ran for the democratic nomination for president in 1984.
