Lima - A recent shortage in cancer drugs has put the lives of thousands at risk. However, that risk should be resolved in the coming weeks.
The supply of Methotrexate, a drug primarily used in the treatment of childhood leukemia, is at dangerously low levels nationally. In response, the F.D.A has approved foreign imports of the drug to alleviate the problem. Shipments should arrive just in time to avoid serious problems. However, some experts say this solution is only a band-aid to a larger problem. According to Lima Memorial Pharmacy Director Mark Recker, the amount of drug shortages are on the rise forcing doctors to seek out unique treatments.
Recker says the reasons for shortages vary, but many are due to manufacturing issues. Generic drugs have a smaller profit margin making them less attractive to manufactures.
