Some progress being made at the Village of Fort Shawnee council meeting Monday night. There had been much controversy concerning the approval of a garbage contract in the Fort. The Village passed a resolution earlier this year to look at one specific garbage contractor to help cut costs. As you may recall, the village was placed in fiscal emergency in 2011. While questions had surfaced concerning the legality of the issue, the Village's Law Director confirmed that settling with just one contractor was in fact legal. Monday night, the Village solidified it's contract with Allen County Recyclers. A move that Mayor Pete Mariotti is happy with. Another positive was the naming of a new Finance Director. Earlier this month the former Finance Director, Charesa Smith, announced her resignation along with allegations against the Mayor concerning the garbage contract bids and the purchase credit-debit machines for police. With the third finance director to leave the position within a year's time, this marked a new day for the Fort as Joann Johnson has be hired. Mariotti says there were 13 or 14 applicants for the position.
