Local students try to come up with a viable by-product of manure

Posted: Updated:

It has been a environmental concern for years and now area students are trying to find a viable solution to the problem.

The Lima Senior environmental science class stood overlooking a pit of sludge at the village of Ottawa Wastewater Treatment Plant last Wednesday. There is something unique about this sludge though, it's actually cow manure. The Van Ham Dairy in Continental is working with Ottawa on a test project of processing the manure into a viable by-product.

The students have jumped on board with an extensive class project of coming up with those viable products and uses of the manure by-products. The students presented their findings to village officials and others, and they were well received. So far it appears that the processing of the cow manure is going well and testing will continue.

Students from Ottawa, Leipsic, Continental and Ft. Jennings also participated in Wednesday's activities.
