Boating safety

Posted: Updated:

Boating season came a little early due to the nice weather so far this year and the Division of Watercraft wants to make sure everyone is safe on the waterways in Ohio. There are a few reminders for boaters that get out on state park waters. Alcohol is not permitted on state waters or lands like state parks. Officials will be on the lakes to make sure boats are prepared Some of the things needed are a type-4 throwable device, anchor and line, a sound making device like an air horn or whistle, a flare for night, a coast guard approved distress signal, and the number one item must be a life jacket and each boat must have a life jacket for every person on the boat.

Wapakoneta Area Supervisor from the Division of Watercraft, Brett Trump, said "you know if you're going to be out on the water have it, wear it. It saves lives and here at the Division of Watercraft we want to see you guys have them on."

Trump also said anyone born after 1982 must go through an Ohio boaters education class, there are three ways it is offered. In a classroom setting, home study course, and online.
