No one likes to be in a car with a back seat driver, but students at Independence Elementary learn to be responsible back seat riders.
Officers from the Lima Police Department teaching third grade students in Lima the importance of wearing a safety belt. Third grade students are chosen because they are old enough to make responsible decisions on their own. Students learned that the safest way to wear a seatbelt is across the shoulders and hips. They also learned to sit in the back seat and away from air bags which are built to protect adults. But the most interesting aspect for the kids was a seat belt demonstration using an egg.
Students also took a pledge to buckle up as soon as they get in a car.
