This is National Dog Bite Prevention Week.

Ohio ranks number four of the top states for dog bite claims.

State Farm Insurance company reports that each year almost five million people are bitten or attacked by dogs.

California is the top state with 527 claims being filed, costing insurance companies more than 20 million dollars.

In Ohio there were 215 claims in 2011 adding up to 5 point 4 million dollars in claims paid.

Allen County Dog Warden Julie Shellhammer says dog owners need to make sure to take precautions whenever a dog is near children.

State Farm paid out more than 109 million dollars in claims in 2011,

Insurers across the country paid out nearly 479 million dollars in dog bite claims..
