Wapakoneta, Ohio -
A health and wellness venture at the Wapakoneta Family YMCA has participants growing their own food.
A community garden is now growing at the Wapakoneta Family YMCA. The idea for the garden began after program manager, Sarah Finkelmeier, learned of successful initiatives at other YMCAs. However, it became a reality much earlier than planned thanks to a $3,000 grant from Lowe's home improvement store.
Wapakoneta City Schools actually earned the grant-- which stipulated some of the spaces must be accessible to the disabled. Students in the vo-ag program put the boxes together and brought them to the YMCA. Finkelmeier says the garden fulfills three YMCA missions- Youth Development, Healthy Living, and Social Responsibility.
