A packed house at Laborers Union Hall on South Dixie Highway on Wednesday, for a United Steel Workers Local 624 informational meeting.
The meeting happens amid some talk from some union members wondering why they are on strike. The two hour long informational meeting comes one day after Your News Now reported a letter sent to USW Local 624 members from Husky Lima Refinery General Manager Roy Warnock, indicated they met union demands on certain contract issues that they thought would avert a strike. The company says that offer was rejected without members having a say.
Wednesday, members went behind closed doors to get answers to their questions about the letter and other issues. No union members we approached wanted to go on camera, feeling it would cause them trouble at work, but they did say things off camera like, "They don't know who to believe", "They should have had a chance to vote on the Friday morning contract offer from the company", also saying, "If they voted today, that contract would pass". Another member called the strike "Stupid", saying "The company has us right where they want us".
So the strike goes on and Edelbrock says they'll talk if the company wants to talk. There will be another membership informational meeting next Wednesday and a hotline will be set-up with updates for workers to get information.
