Dry weather affecting crops

Posted: Updated:

Like Johnny Cash, western Allen County farmer Ed Ulrich walks the line.... The line between soybeans he planted on May 8th on the left and those he planted ten days later on the right. What happened is that the sun literally baked a crust that kept many of the later planted crops from emerging. Some farmers even re-planted their beans after not seeing what they wanted.

As for wheat, thanks to a mild winter that crop is maturing early. Likewise most everybody got corn in on time and it is looking pretty good also.

While farmers may be praying for rain, it's still early in the year to start worrying.
