Town and Gown Award

Posted: Updated:

Thursday night a big award was handed out to a member of the Ohio State-Lima Faculty.

The Violet Meek Town and Gown award which is named after the former OSU-Lima dean. This years recipient was Dr. Bill Angel who is a Political Science professor. The award is given for education for citizenship. Over the years, Angel has worked with the Lima city schools, Big Brother/Big Sister program, served as an official for youth swimming, served on the St. Marys public library board, and most notably was the chair of the Allen County Democratic party and served on the Allen County Board of Elections.

The students are what drives him. He says he sees a lot of his dad in current students. His father was the first in his family to go to college in the time of the great depression. Angel said, "A lot of these students come from the similar kind of background. First generation college and it's incredible for me to be able to help people who remind me so much of my father. Of course dad went on and instilled the image of education, the dream of education in us and it's carried on. Hopefully these students will do the same thing with their children."

Angel is the tenth recipient of the Violet Meek Town and Gown award.
