DELPHOS, OHIO -

As the mercury rises, make sure to remember about your four-legged friends.

Dogs and cats are just as susceptible to heat related illnesses and maybe even more so, thanks to their fur coats. Keep an eye out for heavy panting or breathing trouble as a sign your pet may be struggling with the heat.

Outdoor pets are much more prone to problems but there are a few things you can do to make your furry pal a little more comfortable, starting with a focus on water and shade.  Make frequent checks to fill up the water bowls, and ice cubes are always a nice touch.  Also make sure your outdoor pets have shelter to get out of the sun's rays.

And never leave a pet inside your car when you are out and about. The Allen County dog wardens office has already received several such complaints.
