Lima Ohio -
A reminder about the dangers of leaving children or pets in hot cars after two separate incidents this past week. On Wednesday, 20-year-old Shana Stiles was arrested after leaving her 8-month-old infant inside her car while she ran into the Verizon store on Elida Road. A similar situation occurred in Mercer County when a dog from the K-9 unit died in a patrol car.
Even though temperatures are in the 80's, inside a car, temperatures can reach 135 degrees in less than an hour. If you have to run inside to grab something, Lima Firefighter Sean Carpenter says leaving your pet or child in the car should never be an option, stating leaving the window down does absolutely nothing to lower the temperature.
The Mercer County Sheriff's office is holding a news conference Monday morning to address the death of Zak, the K-9 that died in a hot car. Some members of the community are planning a vigil for Zak on Monday night. It starts at 7 at the Celina Rotary Dog Park.
