The average American family is expected to spend $688.12 on back to school shopping this year. That's a 14.1 percent increase from last year. For many families, that's more than they can afford. Lima's New Life Church International is helping ease that burden, giving away hundreds of school supplies for free.
"Agape," a word coming from the New Testament, meaning love. For Pastor Darnell Williams, its a love for his community, its members and the kids. That's why he and his church chose to help out during these tough economic times, giving away free backpacks and school supplies purchased with the help of local donations.
Betty Williams brought her six grandchildren to Agape Day for assistance, because the price for book bags and supplies adds up when you factor in six backpacks, six packs of pens and pencils and dozens of notebooks.
Where the need is great, the appreciation is greater, just ask Liberty Arts Magnet 8th grader Jalin McDonald who was impressed with the quality of his new book bag.
New Life Church International and Pastor Darnell Williams hope to make Agape Day an annual event, helping community members one book bag at a time.
While New Life Church International hosted the event, also helping out with today's festivities were volunteers from the church's congregation, and assistance with security from REACT of Lima.
