VAN WERT, OHIO -
Members of the Van Wert Judiciary and Annexation Committee along with council members, met Monday night to discuss the future of the local Armory. The big discussion of the night was whether to tear the historic Armory building down to make way for a Family Dollar, or to renovate the building for the Wassenberg Art Center.
Last Monday, council was handed a letter from the Van Wert County Foundation asking to extend the downtown district to allow for demolition of the Armory for the Family Dollar. Donald Lippi, owner of the Armory, has been trying to sell the building for the last 12 years. When interest was made by Family Dollar to come to the area, Lippi was on board.
The problem at hand, a legal contract between Lippi and a developer with the Family Dollar. To avoid legal problems, the decision was made to go with the Wassenberg Art Center.
The next step for art center is to finalize design plans for the Armory. As for the Family Dollar, the hope is that the company will continue to pursue a Van Wert location, but in a different part of town.
