For many residents, American Electric and Power's most recent letter has come as a surprise, announcing that they have chosen to switch to Firstenergy.
Mark Miller checked his mail earlier this week to find a letter from AEP. The letter reads,
"We have been notified that you have chosen to switch to Firstenergy Solutions Corp. as your new electricity supplier. This switch request is scheduled to become effective with your scheduled meter reading date of September 26, 2012. If this information is correct, you do not need to call."
As a result, Mark and other residents confused, as they didn't realize that they had ever made that change.
About a year ago, residents received a letter in the mail informing them of the change to Firstenergy. In that letter, an option to opt out and to stay with AEP. With residents not seeing the option to stay with AEP, or simply throwing away the letter before opening it, the Better Business Bureau has been busy answering calls from confused residents.
The commissioners' decision to go to Firstenergy was made because the company offered their services for the least amount of money, a nine to ten percent savings that residents will notice on their bills.
Residents still have the opportunity to switch back to services with AEP, but only have until August 25, 2012 to do so. For a side-by-side comparison of all of Ohio's electric companies, visit www.puco.ohio.gov.
