Possible progress in Husky strike

Posted: Updated:

We haven't been able to say this in a while, but there may be light at the end of the tunnel related to the United Steelworkers - Husky Energy Talks.

USW Local 624 President Mike Edelbrock says they received verbal indications today (Aug 22) that Husky may be preparing a settlement offer that Edelbrock says he would take back to the membership for a vote. He says the only way he would not take an offer back to his co-workers is if the company includes international issues in a local contract offer, he says international issues are not on the table.

The two sides today talked about issues such as reduction in sick benefits, the health and safety position, and contracting out jobs. Edelbrock says he saw some positive signs today. If a settlement offer is put on the table, he says it would be the first since May 25th, the day the strike started. Husky today not as optimistic, saying they are trying to reach deals on individual issues with little progress being made.

They say they are reviewing today's discussions and what steps to take next. No new talks have been set.
