Local animal lovers and rescuers gathered at Lima's Fraternal Order of Police to pay respects to the fallen K-9 Zac, as well as all other service animals. Zac was part of the K-9 unit in the Mercer County Sheriff's office, but died after being left inside a police cruiser.
Local residents gathered to hear and read poems, and to share their stories about mistreated animals. Mary Leidel hosted the event to remind everyone to remember Zac, and to love all animals.
Zac's handler, Deputy Chad Fortkamp, was not charged with the death of Zac, after it was determined that there was insufficient evidence to charge him.
