Belton asks for intervention not conviction

Posted: Updated:

A former American Township fire lieutenant was back in court on Friday. Jason Belton is asking for intervention instead of a conviction for allegedly stealing more than fourteen thousand dollars from a fire union fund.

Belton's attorney, Andrew King, submitted a report from a clinical psychologist and argued that Belton suffers from long standing physiological conditions, including post traumatic stress disorder, impulse control problems, and he says Belton is bipolar. King says that likely contributed to his client's criminal behavior.

Allen County Prosecutor Juergen Waldick argued that the motion should be rejected. He says the doctor submitting the report was not available for questioning and that the criteria for mental illness was not met.

Now we'll get to hear what the psychologist has to say in person at a hearing set for October 1st.
