(Columbus) – After a month-long investigation, agents from the Ohio Investigative Unit
have cited an Ada bar for serving a 21-year-old at least 24 shots of alcohol in less than
one hour, requiring him to be hospitalized.
Agents charged Ada residents Richard L. Cribley, 61, and Joseph L. Jarvi, 33, with sale
or furnishing intoxicating liquor to an intoxicated person. In addition, Cribley Enterprise
Inc., also known as the Regal Beagle Bar, 103 – 107 N. Main Street in Ada, was issued
an administrative citation for sale of beer or intoxicating liquor to an intoxicated person.
"Allowing and promoting over-serving puts everyone in the community in danger,"
Toledo Agent-in-Charge Ray Rodriguez said. "We are happy that we were able to assist
Chief Harnishfeger and find justice for this young man."
Ada Police Chief Michael Harnishfeger contacted OIU on Aug. 30 to look into the
violations, when the young man was admitted into intensive care with alcohol poisoning.
"It was incredibly dangerous and irresponsible to serve this young man or anyone else
that excessive amount of alcohol," Harnishfeger said. "I sincerely hope this serves as a
wake-up call and this never happens again."
Criminal charges will be presented to the Hardin County Municipal Court. Administrative
charges against the liquor permit will be presented to the Ohio Liquor Control
Commission once all criminal proceedings are completed. Penalties from the Liquor
Control Commission may include issuing a fine, or suspending or revoking a liquor
license.
The Ohio Investigative Unit is a division of the Ohio Department of Public Safety. All agents
are plain-clothed fully sworn peace officers. OIU is the only state law enforcement agency
specifically tasked with investigating food stamp fraud crimes. Agents also investigate
alcohol and tobacco violations.
