It's safety week at Ohio Northern University, and students are getting educated on everything from human trafficking to relationship abuse.
Tonight's seminar was on identity theft, a crime that mostly affects college students.
Before he gave his seminar about identity theft to ONU students. Sgt. Gillispie wanted see how much students already knew about the subject. He talked to 17 women on campus, identifying himself as a USA Today reporter. He says students were more than willing to give out their personal information, such as their address and phone number.
Gillispie also says things that seem harmless to most people, like putting your photos on facebook, make it that much easier for someone to identify you.
He says the best way to protect yourself from identity theft is to limit the information you share on facebook, and shred documents that list your name, and address.
