Flood Update

Posted: Updated:

People flowed into the monthly meeting of the Blanchard River Flood Mitigation Coalition.

Turf Concepts of Elida was awarded the job of cleaning trees from the Blanchard River and its tributaries. The money for the project came from a national emergency grant after the June wind storm. Turf Concepts is working with Job and Family Services on hiring the people to perform the work. Work is expected to begin before winter and is expected to take a year to complete. The Coalition is also expecting a report from the Army Corp of Engineers in early December outlining flood mitigation projects.

Three areas are to be addressed: the I-9 approach, diversion channels and moving people from flood prone areas. Although it has taken a while, there is date when a final plan is expected.the project won't stop all flooding. It's intended to reduce the damage caused by floods. There have been eleven minor flooding events since the 2007 flood.
