It took more than 25 rounds to crown a winner, and this year's winner is a first time winner. Alotus Wei, a fifth grader from Shawnee middle school beat out last year's champion LeeAnn Jose, who misspelled acquittal.

The word that won the championship for Wei was peculate.

Wei says her parents were a big help in preparing her for the regional spelling bee.

Wei will receive an all expenses paid trip to Washington D.C. to compete in the national Scripps Howard Spelling Bee May 26th through June first.
