abuse reports rise just as county officials bring attention to the cause
during Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month.

calls concerning abuse typically rise in March and remain high towards
the end of the school year. They also tend to increase just as students
return to school in the fall, however, Allen County is trying to
reduce those numbers as part of a pilot program called Differential Response.
The county has participated in the program since June of last
year. Scanland says studies of similar programs have shown a decrease in
repeat offenders. The goal is to have the program available throughout Ohio within a couple of years. Allen County Children Services
investigated 928 cases of maltreatment in 2012.
