Imagine being on your death bed at 19 years of age. Diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at a two months old, this is exactly what happened to Wapakoneta native Amber Payne.
Her lungs deteriorated to only 14% capacity, she was bed ridden, had a feeding tube and was on oxygen. In March of 2005, she planned her funeral. She was one of 117 thousand people on donor lists, and was close to becoming one of the 18 people who die every day waiting for organ donation. In September of 2005, she received a double lung transplant. She now spends some of her busy schedule being an advocate for organ donation.
April is National Organ Donation Month. If you would like to become an organ donor, you can get more information at BMV.OHIO.GOV or www.donatelifeohio.org.
