Lima Ohio -
It's all over the Internet. You tube videos of teenagers shoveling cinnamon into their mouths. The challenge may seem harmless, but a new medical report says the stunt can have negative medical effects.
It's called the cinnamon challenge. Teens try and swallow a spoonful of cinnamon, then end up coughing, choking and some even end up in the ER. A report by the Journal Pediatrics found the challenge led to a growing number of visits to emergency rooms and poison centers.
With health effects like a collapsed lung and asthma, doctors are still trying to figure out why teens attempt the cinnamon challenge.
Especially since it doesn't give you a high like bath salts or synthetic drugs.
In 2011, the American Association of Poison Control Centers received 51 calls related to the cinnamon challenge. In the first six months of 2012, that number rose to 178.
