As we told you earlier in the week, April is National Organ Donation Month. Local double lung recipient Amber Payne and others have been speaking at area high schools to spread the word on organ donation.
Although there has been success at getting more people registered there is still a long way to go. Only 55 percent of Ohioans are registered organ donors. With 3,455 men, women and children in Ohio on waiting lists, it could be seen as a health crisis. Misconceptions may keep people from registering. If you're worried about disfigurement, there is great pride taken in reconstruction. Nobody will know unless you want them to, all donations are confidential. If you're not sure if your organs are suitable for donation register anyway.
