Improving School Safety

Posted: Updated:

When New Bremen built the new high school, safety from school shootings was not the main focus. Now administrators look to move the main office closer to the entrance way, in order to better monitor guests who enter the building.

upon entering the high school, guests must walk through the cafeteria to get to the current office location. Superintendent Howard Overman and board members are discussing the possibility of moving the office closer to the main entrance, into what is currently being used as a community room.

Following the incidents at Sandy Hook Elementary and the recent attacks in Boston, Senate President Keith Faber announcing that he has proposed legislation that would allow schools to approach voters with a separate levy, strictly addressing school safety improvement.

Last weekend, half a dozen Allen County teachers and staff members gathered at Perry High School to learn how to handle a school shooting scenario, including profiling and tactics to take down a shooter. Faber says training programs such as this have not been discussed, but says if schools ask for legislation, that would not be out of the question.

Currently New Bremen School officials lock all but one door to the high school, and the elementary school has a buzzer and camera security system already installed.

New Bremen board members will discuss moving the high school office to the community room location at their next meeting on May 8th.
