St. Marys, Ohio -
An iconic part of St. Marys skyline continues to come down. Crews are finishing up the demolition of the smoke stack that once stood as a part of the skyline above St. Marys. The decision was made by council to tear down the smoke stack and the power plant that is attached to it.
Crews have been tearing the stack down in a top-to-bottom approach, pushing the bricks into the center and retrieving them from the base. Reports suggest crews are 60 percent complete. Once complete, only 30-35 feet of the stack will remain. Once asbestos removal is complete at the power plant, bidding will begin to demolish the plant and what remains of the smoke stack.
The project to removal all but 30 feet of the smoke stack is expected to be completed by Friday May 3rd, while the power plant project is expected to be completed next year.
