Motorists Cautioned to Watch for Equipment Crossing Ramps at Ohio 117/309 Next Week; Traffic Cameras Now Operating at I-75 and Fourth Street

Interstate 75

  • Motorists are asked to be aware of earth moving equipment which will be crossing over the northbound I-75 entrance and exit ramps at Ohio 117/309 beginning next week and continuing for the next three weeks. The trucks will be moving excavated earth from along I-75 and transporting it to the interchange to construct a new ramp.
  • Law enforcement will be in the area to assist with traffic monitoring. Traffic will not be stopped but flaggers may periodically slow traffic to allow equipment to cross.
  • Occasional nighttime lane closures will continue on Interstate 75 throughout the zone from Fourth Street to Ohio 81 generally from 7 p.m. each night until approximately 10 a.m. the following day. Normal traffic patterns of two lanes in each direction will resume during daytime hours.
  • Grinding of existing pavement outside the barrier wall continues throughout the zone with no effect on traffic.
  • Motorists should be aware that all entrance and exit ramp merge areas have been shortened throughout the project area. Drivers on Interstate 75 are encouraged to use the passing lane through the zone if they do not wish to exit. Signs advising this have been placed throughout the project area.
  • Concrete sealing and painting has begun on the bridges at Fourth Street and Reservoir Road with no effect on traffic. Nighttime lane closures on I-75 related to this operation are expected to occur within the next few weeks.
  • Traffic cameras have been placed on I-75 at the Fourth Street interchange. The cameras offer a view both northbound and southbound of the construction zone and also at the interchange. The cameras may be accessed at www.odotlima75.com, or at www.Ohgo.com.
  • Please drive slowly through the construction zone.

Ohio 117/309

  • Nighttime work to install drainage components throughout the work zone between Leonard Avenue/Kibby Street to Belmont Avenue (Kmart) is now complete.
  • Next week drainage work will occur during daytime hours between Willard Avenue (Speedway) and Belmont Avenue (Kmart). This work is not expected to cause a change in the existing traffic pattern.
  • Some closures of side streets throughout the work zone may be necessary next week. The closures will occur during daytime hours only.
  • Work to install temporary signals at Lost Creek Boulevard and Devonshire Drive is expected to occur next week with minimal impact to traffic.
  • All traffic on Ohio 117/309 is one lane in each direction in the eastbound lanes. A two-way, left-turn lane begins at Saratoga Avenue. Traffic will remain in this pattern until mid to late summer to allow for work at the interchange at Interstate 75 and on the north side of Ohio 117/309.

Ohio 81

  • All traffic on Ohio 81 from just west of Stewart Road to just west of Neubrecht Road is now shifted into the existing eastbound lanes.
  • Both eastbound and westbound traffic is maintained one lane in each direction in the existing eastbound lanes while work begins to remove the existing westbound lanes.
  • Work to remove the existing pavement in the westbound lanes on Ohio 81 is expected to begin next week with no effect on the current traffic patterns.
  • The ramp from northbound Interstate 75 to eastbound Ohio 81 (exit 127 A) is now closed; however, access to eastbound Ohio 81 is maintained by using the existing loop ramp on the northeast side of the interchange. A temporary signal is controlling ramp traffic.
  • The change in traffic pattern on Ohio 81 and the ramp closure will remain in place throughout the summer.

About the I-75 Project Phases:

Project 2 will reconstruct the existing lanes of Interstate 75 from Fourth Street to just north of Ohio 81 in Lima. This phase also includes the reconstruction of the Fourth Street, Ohio 81 and Ohio 117/309 interchanges; a safety upgrade to Ohio 309 east of the Interstate 75 interchange; and the reconstruction and realignment of Ohio 81 from Neubrecht to Stewart Road. This phase is expected to be completed in 2015.

Project 1 of the Interstate 75 reconstruction project, which is the replacement of the Fourth Street and Reservoir Road bridges over Interstate 75 in Lima, began last year and will be completed in the spring. Both structures were opened to traffic last fall. Project 3, from the Auglaize County line to Fourth Street, will begin in 2014. This phase also includes the reconstruction of the Breese Road and Ohio 65 interchanges as well as the replacement of the Hanthorn and McClain Road bridges over Interstate 75. The overall project is scheduled to be completed in 2016.
