The program has been up and running for a year now, and so far, the implementation of Alternative Response has been a success.
The report of possible child abuse or neglect starts when a call comes in. The traditional path is a formal investigation. Alternative Response offers another, less invasive option. It is designed to partner with and engage the family. The goal is to improve the outcome by strengthening the family. The report of abuse and neglect increased from 571 in 2008 to 928 in 2012.
Alternative response served 160 families. As Allen County Children Services continue to work with families, they hope to turn those numbers around. Children Services would like to continue partnering with the community to educate them about what they do. That would make people more willing to report cases of suspected abuse and increase referrals. Helping to keep our children safe.
