Daniel C. Martin was sentenced to 18 years to life in prison for the death of 26 year old Melinda "Mini" Shinn. Fifteen years for the murder and a mandatory 3 year prison term for the gun specification.
According to prosecutors, in November of 2012 Martin put a gun to Shinn's head and pulled the trigger. Shinn's 9-year-old son was in the house at the time of his mom's murder. Martin went on the run and nearly two months later was found in Ft. Wayne and was brought back to Mercer County to face trail.
Before the sentence was handed out, Martin spoke to members of Shinn's family and apologized for what happened, but said the picture prosecutors painted was not what happened. Martin pled guilty to the murder charge back in May. After sentencing today, Shinn's parents told media that they were glad that Martin ended up pleading guilty and the cased didn't go to trial.
Shinn's murder was the only homicide in Mercer County last year and according to law enforcement the first one for the Village of Rockford.
