In an effort to improve rail road crossing safety the Lima Allen County Regional Planning Commission recently conducted a study and is asking for public comment.
The LACRPC releasing the draft railroad improvement study which took a look at eight CSX rail crossings from the Auglaize County line into the center of the city of Lima. The purpose of the study was to analyze crossings, determine deficiencies and make recommendations for improvements. All eight crossings studied were considered to be in good physical condition. All had active signals including cross bucks, gates and flashing signals. Six of the eight did have sight distance limitations with two of them having trees in the road right of way obstructing the view of the signals. Recommendations were to remove trees, replace, repair or install passive signage as well as pavement markings. It was also recommended to increase enforcement at the studied crossings. LACRPC reports that there were 6 train / vehicle accidents along this section of rail resulting in 3 injuries and no fatalities from 2002 to 2011.
