Part of solving the flooding problem, is removing structures from flood prone areas. The Village of Ottawa is working with FEMA and the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program on three projects to buy flood prone and flood damaged properties.
Project one has been approved and affects nine homes, mainly on the west end of town. Project two is waiting for approval at the state level, and project three is still at the local level. The application for project three has a due date in October. A total of twenty homes are affected by the projects. Letters will me mailed out, and a short period of time is given for a response.
The buyout is voluntary and it's up to the home owner whether or not they accept the offer. Once a project is approved by FEMA, it must be completed in two years.
