Democratic State Senators Nina Turner and Capri Cafaro made the motion for the Senate to eliminate the 20-year statue of limitations in regards to crimes of rape and sexual battery.
Supporters argue that removing the statue would allow the state to clear a backlog of years old sexual assault evidence kits. Supporters and rape crisis centers support the elimination of the statute, as it gives victims more time to build up the courage to speak out.
With bi-partisan support, S.B. 83 was referred to the Senate's Criminal Justice Committee where it has had one hearing. Senate is currently on recess and will not reconvene for several weeks.
