Castro's Commits Suicide: Could it Happen Here?

Posted: Updated:
Allen County, Ohio -

Ariel Castro was found hanging by his prison bed sheet in his cell at the Orient facility. He was found around 9:20pm, and after the medical staff attempted CPR, he was pronounced dead at 10:52pm.

Suicides are not common place in prisons or jail, but they do occur. Take for example a similar situation that occurred in Allen County back in 2002, when Glenn Fryer committed suicide while awaiting sentencing. He was also a person of interest in the disappearance of 14 year old Nicholle Coppler who went missing in May of 1999.

Since then, Chief Deputy Jim Everett says the jail has seen several changes to prevent additional suicides from occurring. All inmates are checked on at least every 30 minutes and suicide threats are watched 24 hours a day.

To assist the in-house psychological services coordinator and correctional staff, several procedures are implemented daily. One of those upgrades include 24 hour camera surveillance on the facility. Also helping to prevent injuries and death, there are call boxes in each of the cells, allowing fellow inmates to report suspicious behavior without getting involved.

Since Fryer's incident more than a decade ago, Everett says no suicides have been reported in the Allen County Jail.
