Guiding Light Maternity Home

Teen pregnancy changes lives in the blink of an eye. For young mothers, finishing high school or finding a job can remain a constant struggle. Jack McGuire explains how today marks a special stepping stone for one organization hoping to help young mothers get a fresh start.
A house sits on South Main Street of Lima. To some people, its just a house, but for a few young mothers in the Lima area, it's a home.

Today Guiding Light held a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate their recognition as a state licensed maternity home. The organization opened its doors over a year ago and is Lima's first maternity home. The executive director of the home knows licensure helps support the future for all involved with Guiding Light.

The celebration gave those in attendance the opportunity to meet board members involved in the decision. Doctor William Scherger states the quality of the program assisted in pushing for the licensure.

State representative Matt Huffman attended the event to assist in the celebration. When guiding light applied for the licensure, strict regulations prevented them from receiving it. Huffman pushed legislation that softened those regulations.

Since opening their doors, Guiding Light has given residence to fourteen women while helping many more within the community outside of the home. Julianne Frankhouser says Guiding Light plans to expand within Lima and even further.
