Putnam County woman with brain tumor gets special wish granted from the Ohio State Highway Patrol

Meet Chelsie Juarez.

The 23 year old has been battling cancer for quite a while and unfortunately the end is near.

Hospice comes in twice a week to check in on her and it’s now just a waiting game for the family.

“Twelve years ago we found out about the cancerous brain tumor she has. She went through several years of chemo and it kind of went stable. Now it’s just out of control and there’s no treatment for it.” said Chelsie’s mom, Joyce.

On Thursday, Chelsie got a surprise visit from three Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers who gave her a special honor.

Gene Smith, commander of the Findlay District of the Ohio State Highway Patrol read a proclamation by the Superintendent of the Ohio State Highway Patrol. “By virtue of the authority vested in me and that reposing special trust and confidence in the loyalty, patriotism, fidelity and prudence of Chelsea R. Juarez, I Paul A. Pride, superintendent of the Ohio State Highway Patrol do hereby designate the aforementioned Honorary Trooper in the Ohio State Highway Patrol to have hold and exercise under said designation all of the privileges thereto”.

Chelsie also got a special trooper’s hat, her own (toy) cruiser and a chance to check out the trooper’s real rides.

“Oh I think it was great. I think they were really good with her. I know she was thrilled and it just made her day.” said Joyce Juarez.

It feels really good to be able to do something for someone who appreciates us, especially, in a culture we live in where not everybody does appreciate law enforcement. It’s good to be reminded that there are people out there who appreciate the work that all first responders do, be it police or fire or any other front line responders to incidents.” said Lima OSP trooper Lt. David Brown.

“She doesn’t have much time left, so you know, as many happy moments we can give her, you know, the more the better, just more memories.”  added Joyce Juarez.
