CHICAGO (AP) - A Chicago-based appeals court has halted the deportation of a Mexican immigrant in Ohio to assess whether his deportation might seriously harm his three children who are U.S. citizens. The 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals found this week that Ricardo Sanchez made plausible arguments he couldn't support his family on Mexican wages. One of his kids requires costly physical therapy. An immigration judge cited Sanchez's convictions for driving under the influence in his deportation ruling.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Democrat Nan Whaley is using a re-election campaign fund for Dayton mayor that's not subject to state contribution limits to raise money for her 2018 bid for Ohio governor. A notice on Whaley's campaign website informing potential donors that the mayoral fund can accept unlimited contributions was taken down Thursday after The Associated Press inquired about it. Whaley's gubernatorial campaign says it is voluntarily limiting donations to match state limits.

CINCINNATI (AP) - Jury selection has begun under tight restrictions after an Ohio judge rejected a defense motion to dismiss charges in the retrial of a white police officer who killed an unarmed black motorist. Ray Tensing's attorneys filed a motion Wednesday saying the county prosecutor violated a gag order and the case should be dismissed. But the judge ruled Thursday that the prosecutor's comments weren't "egregious" enough to warrant that.

MIDDLETOWN, Ohio (AP) - The National Weather Service says three tornadoes touched down during a storm in southwest Ohio on Wednesday night. Authorities say there were no reports of serious injuries near the Dayton area. The high winds tossed drainage pipes through the glass windows of a motorcycle shop, heavily damaged a handful of homes and interrupted a high school graduation ceremony.
