Local students have to work for their sweet treat by using science this morning.

Elida Middle School 5th graders started their Monday with a Kool-Aid SESA project. Each group of students had five testing cups, a cup of sugar, tasting cups, and a cup of Kool-Aid powder. By using the scientific method, students had to figure out how much sugar they needed to add to the bitter powder to make their sweet treat. This project taught students to think of dependent and independent variables while working as a team. Teachers say the students love that the projects are things they use in everyday life.

"Anything they can relate to and that makes it so they can bring it home with them and show their parents and show their family, and it makes more sense than just reading something out of a book. It actually makes sense to what they're doing in the real world," said Kathy Buescher.

Students had to add more than two teaspoons of sugar before the mixture was tasty enough to drink. The SESA program, or Science Enhancement for Science Advancement, is sponsored by the chemical compound companies in the area.
