Delphos man in custody over infant's death

From the Delphos Police Dept.:

Investigators from the City of Delphos and the Van Wert County Sheriff’s Department,  working in conjunction with the United States 

Marshall Service in Toledo Ohio,  arrested a Delphos Man in connection with the recent death the of a 15 month old child.   

On Tuesday 11-15-2016 at 11:57 a.m.:  Delphos Police, Fire and EMS responded to a 911 call at Apt #24 at the Old Lincoln Inn Apartments located at 24249 Old Lincoln Hwy in Delphos,  in regards to a unresponsive child.    On arrival,  responding units discovered the child to be deceased and no life saving measures were possible.    Investigators from Delphos asked for assistance from the Van Wert County Sheriff’s Department as well as the Van Wert County Coroner’s Office.   The Ohio Bureau of Criminal  Investigation and Identification had been called in to assist at the scene. 

The Van Wert Coroner also arrived on scene and met with investigators.   The mother of the child as well as many neighbors and witnesses had been interviewed in the initial stages of the investigation.   The scene was processed by a evidence investigator with BCI&I out of the Bowling Green Ohio Office.   An autopsy on the child was ordered by the Van Wert County Coroner’s Office.  The autopsy was to be performed at the Lucas County Coroner’s Office.    

On Thursday 11-17-2016,  Investigators contacted the Van Wert County Prosecutors Office to discuss the case,  along with the  preliminary findings discovered by the Coroner’s Office in the autopsy.    The Van Wert County Grand Jury will ultimately hear the facts in the case in the near future.  Prosecutors authorized initial charges of Child Endangerment (F3) and Felonious Assault (F2) in this case,  pending the Grand Jury review of more serious charges.    

City Police obtained arrest warrants for Christopher M. Peters (age 26) who also lives at this residence at Apt. #24 in Delphos.   The suspect was absent from the scene when the child had been discovered.  

On Friday morning  11-18-2016:  Investigators believed the suspect maybe in the Hancock County area but no definite address was yet available.    Investigators contacted the United States Marshall Service Toledo Ohio Office, to possibly assist them in locating the suspect and taking him into custody.  

The Unites States Marshalls contacted local investigators shortly after 4:00 p.m. this date  to report that they had taken the suspect into custody in the City of Fostoria in Hancock County.   Fostoria Police transported the defendant to the Hancock County Jail in Findlay Ohio and he will await extradition back to Van Wert County on the (2) Felony Warrants.   The defendant also has an outstanding Failure to Appear Warrant out of Hancock County unrelated to this criminal case.   The court date  and time is not yet determined.  

Investigators from Delphos and  the Van Wert County Sheriff’s Department,  did speak to the defendant at the Hancock County Jail late Friday night,   but the details of the interview will not be released as the investigation continues.  No more information is yet available at this time.
