Trooper Robert Gatchel was on routine patrol in the area of Piquad Road in Allen County when he initiated a traffic stop for a speeding violation and noticed the driver was in distress and unable to breath. Lima Post officials say Gatchel immediately went into action after the driver gave him the universal sign for choking.

Gatchel performed the Heimlich maneuver and was able to remove the piece of food from the driver's airway. Findlay District Commander, Captain Gene Smith says Gatchel's life saving actions earned him the Ohio State Highway Patrol's Certificate of Recognition.
