Lima City Schools announced Monday they will spend the last week in March celebrating the public school system.

"Specifically for us to celebrate Spartan Pride and be able to have an opportunity to showcase what we're all about," says Lima City Schools Superintendent Jill Ackerman.

Superintendent Jill Ackerman feels there's sometimes a negative stigma surrounding public education. She says it's time for everyone, including local lawmakers, to get behind them.

"Quite frankly when you have legislators that are local, that live in our own community, that do nothing more than downgrade public school system, we feel that we have stand up for public education and fight back," Ackerman says.

Ackerman says her many years of experience and the stories from local families proves the great things being done. One mother held back tears and she described the positive impact Lima City Schools has had on her daughter.

"Soon realizing what the Lima City Schools did for special needs, we open enrolled her and now she is growing leaps and bounds. They have created almost a miracle child," parent Amy Cunningham says.

The highlight of the celebration week will be the Lima Senior Open House on March 30 from 4-6 p.m. All buildings and programs will be highlighted and Ackerman encourages anyone to stop by.

"Do not judge public education until you've had an opportunity to really come inside and be a part of it, even if it's for a day; mentor a child, make a difference, be a part of it, and I think once you enter through the doors, your whole perception of public education will quickly change," Ackerman said.
