Lima Ohio -

A Lima Church is looking to take a stand against a highly disputed Ohio law. The St. Gerard Catholic Church in Lima hosted a Candlelight Prayer Vigil to abolish the State of Ohio's death penalty. Those attending were invited to pray on the issue, learn about the Catholic Church's teaching on capital punishment, and advocate for the end of the death penalty.

With three Ohio individuals now scheduled for execution later this year, Diocese of Toledo, Bishop Daniel Thomas has urged parishes in the area to combat the death penalty. Father Michael Sergi of the St. Gerard Parish has accepted the invitation and believes the government does not have the right to take life. He explains, "The Catholic Church is against taking the life of anyone." He adds, "All life is precious."

Sergi and the Catholic Church hope to put an end to the death penalty not just in Ohio, but across the entire country.
